Hi guys,

Howard Metcalfe alerted me these videos taken at the recent Scale Fest at Port Meadow. First up is the splendid sortie of Chris Richard's L-3 powered semi-profile MiG 29:

Next here is Simon Milan's (over) L-2 powered Opel Hatry

and last, but not least, Nick Peppiat's MiG 15:

By all accounts, the weather was really rather good. I now wish I had made the effort to go, but I'm so pleased Russ Lister and others were there to record the event. Enjoy! :cheer:

Simon comments:

"Yes, it is my Opel Hatry at Port Meadow (actually my old free flight stamping ground back in the 50s and early 60s). I entered the Opel in the “3D” rocket class, but failed to complete the 3 necessary flights due to airframe damage. I thought I had it sufficiently trimmed after the initial test flights, but it behaved rather wildly as you can see from the video. On my second contest flight it dived in under power and sustained damage that I couldn’t repair on the field.

Yes, it does behave as if it's somewhat over-powered (using the '120mN' L2s I got from Neil S) and the fact that the model is so close-coupled (v short moment arm) doesn’t help. It’s extremely sensitive to rudder and elevator settings and a tad too much down elevator was the reason for its crash under power. I suspect that the low thrust line also contributes significantly to its aerobatic tendencies!

However, it’s now repaired, and I will try some more local test flying to see if I can eradicate its bad behaviour"

Good stuff. .
