Thank you Howard. Perhaps it is the helmet which gives the impression of a Brobindagion pilot. I've checked my calculations; the model is 1/25 scale, as is the pilot. Perhaps he is sitting a bit high.

I found this photo on the Internet of a pilot with a bone dome in the cockpit of a Hawker Sea Hawk, an aeroplane developed at the same time as the P.1081 of similar design and size of cockpit:

so perhaps my pilot is not too much out of scale even if it looks that way. I'm obviously on a learning curve with pilots!

I've read that pilots wound their seats up the highest available amount for take offs and or landings and the Sea Hawk pilot looks very high and much more like your P.1081. I think you cracked it.

Roger/Howard,

I think the pilot looks ok, any smaller and you may not spot it from the ground anyway. But, if now you've mentioned o.c.d and YOU really don't like it...Change it. If thine eyes offend thee...

Andy.

Note added by me , Roger: Andy (as is his wont) has a good point ... but ... even for those with OCD, there are only so many hours in the day. The best strategy (for me) is to move on to the next step (see below).

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far far away I've been covering and finishing the tail feathers. I bought some old white 'Modelspan' some time ago and this seemed an ideal model to use it on, rather than the more modern 'Starspan', which, though very good in terms od wet strength (I always cover 'wet) shrinks a lot and takes a lot of 50/50 dope/thinners to fill the holes.

After two coats of dope I separated the rudder and elevators ready for the alloy hinges:

Slots are cut carefully to take the hinges (three per side) which are glued in place with slow-setting cyano:

I find adjustable elevators and rudders useful trimming aids, but I draw the line at movable  ailerons!

Wings will be next, making sure I keep the 1/16" washout. I like the smell of dope and a career of sniffing solvents means I'm qute inured to chemical nasties, and anyway 'Rustins' thinners is mostly acetone without the evil xylene. Thanks be to the vintage car enthusiasts that we can still get this stuff. :cheer:

The Hawker P.1081 is now covered and all tail is glued in place:

And here it is with its immediate successor, the Hawker P 1067, otherwise known as the Hunter:

Construction of my Skyleada Hunter was finished some time ago, but the next step - spraying with colour, is not a procedure I neither relish nor am good at, so I've kinda put it off and put it off. I've bought enough green 'eu de nil' Tamiya acrylic paint for both of them (they will be finished as the prototypes) and now I only have to pluck up the courage to get out my airbrush.

Ooooh! What a fine pair, even in their nakedness. :woohoo:

Comment added by moderator: No, really, missus! It has been suggested the P 1081 should be finished in Australian livery (The RAAF were looking at the P 1081 as a Meteor replacement) and I'd be much more comfortable spraying in silver. A 'win-win' situation?

But I love 'eu de nil
' :S
