You will see from the report on May's Old Warden meeting in our flying thread that , with a downthrust tab fitted and the right motor, the F-15 really does fly, and fly well.

Above: Luke's F-15 with downthrust tab.

Luke (above) says he will now make a Mk 2 incorporating some refinements, particularly with respect to grain direction of the balsa and the 'decalage'. The grey colour is too light, so I will go back to the templates and do some image manipulation.:S

All this is most gratifying, and if any reader would like copies of the F-15 templates, just ask. :)

I now have to give my attention designing an F-35. :woohoo:

Luke and I recently went flying with his F-15. It was a cold, drizzly but blessedly calm day. The F-15 flew beautifully with a 320 TSP L-2:

It looked a real treat in the air. Luke is planning a 'Mk 2' with some refinements, but if you would like copies of the templates as it is now (and guarenteed to fly!) just say. :cheer:

It looks great in the air, and flies very well. However, version 2 really needs a fuselage of harder/thicker balsa than the 1/16th used. Moisture and heat causes a lot of movement on the surfaces thus this current version has to be trimmed out every time you fly it. Having said that, it's still worth it! You can see some of the flights in this short video montage (first half of video is F15, then Iskra, thank Hawk) The best flights were at Old Warden in May but alas I do not have footage of those.

Though I take great care with my templatesI'm notoriously bad about plans, often building from just a couple of sketches.

However, the annotated parts below may help the potential buider with balsa thicknesses and, importantly, grain direction to ameliorate the warping problems Luke had with his 'mk 1':

The model is, at this stage of development, 'for those with some experience of profile jets'. Perhaps I can persuade Piotr Tendera to produce a kit for TSP L-2? :)
I'm not sure if printed tissue covering is worth doing for this very plain type of model: a couple of thin coats of grey paint and a few decals would work just as well, or better.

I look forward to seeing Luke's (and perhaps Howard's) next versions of this design which does, I'm pleased to say, show great promise.
And yes, I know that I'm now supposed to be designing an F-35! :woohoo:

I got my F-15 flying very nicely indeed at Peterborough Flying Aces. It climbed well and has a gratifying glide. So, with two 'proof of concept' prototypes (mine and Luke's) I thought I't draw up a 'proper' plan, just in case someone (no names, no pack drill) wants to publish it.B)

Ho hum, drawing up plans is not my forte, so I've enlisted the help of the estimable Rob Smith. Below is the result of one iteration of jpegs and PDF files going back and forth.

Hmm ... still lots to do ....

I hadn't realised quite how complicated this 'hemi-demi- semi profile model is, so my task is:

(a) draw up all the parts at the correct size and make sure they all fit together.

(b) indicate on the plan how they all fit together. It's all obvious to me (and hopefully to an experienced builder) but probably not to the fledging flier these sorts of models are aimed at.

Help - all comments welcome! :)
