Hi Guys,

This long-anticipated meeting would be the first since September last year (there was no meeting in May), so I was more than a little distressed by the weather forecast:

However, as I had people to meet and motors to deliver, I went along with Daniel (thanks for the lift Daniel!), arriving around 10.30. By this time the rain had cleared, the wind had dropped. and when we had collected our models and other paraphernalia and set ourselves in a far corner under the hedge by the road (what wind drift there was was towards the radio control 'flyers'. it was overcast and calm. Perfect weather for testing motors and trimming Daniel's models.

So this weather forecast, which had obviously put off many modellers (the field was all but deserted) was not the be trusted! :woohoo:

The old Rapier motors were unpredictable and some refused to light at all (they do age) but the TSP motors acquitted themselves well and we had no model damaging motor burn-thru's. TSP L-2 motors are of course slightly bigger and a bit heavier than Rapiers, but this seemed to affect the models not at all. All very reassuring. :cheer:
The Viper is a good test model: with a '150 mN' motor it cruised steadily around the field at about twenty feet or so; With a TSP L-2 HP (300 mN) it became very skittish, climbing to great height, there performing multiple loops. A motor tested at 200 mN suited it perfectly: a lovely flight at height without aerobatics .... over the trees and far away. We never did get it back, :S

The '150 mN motors suited the MiG 15 and Flitzer very well, and a TSP L-1 gave my F-100 Super Sabre a splendid flight a over my head. This caused me to swivel around. Daniel remarked that he couldn't decide whether the model's flight pattern or me nearly falling over gave him the most amusement. I got him back by laughing at the antics of his BV 212 which was badly affected by turbulence and lack of nose weight.

In fact, during that long calm spell we had very few duff flights. My new Aeromodeller plan T-38 Talon flew 'off the board (again on a 150 motor, which appear more reliable in flight than on the test bench) and Daniel's FD-1, Flitzer and larger, more sophisticated T-38 had their maiden sorties. Hi Doodlebug was more of a handful. We tried it with motors with a variety of powers. I do not remember if he had a complete flight out of it.
The sun came out in the afternoon, the wind picked up and it was quite turbulent, so what flight you got was then a bit of a lottery. Pete Smart's large EDF Hunter climbed to great height and crash landed in the Swiss Gardens (and I lost the Viper, see above)

But overall we had a good time. Chris was there but attendance was very sparse bordering on the surreal.

Our little group of rocketeers. This was taken in the early afternoon before conditions had become decidesly tricky. I'm the old guy in blue; Max (Daniel's son) is busy and Chris, with his 'Leader of the Pack' velocipede is sorting out his Flitzer, which made a splendid flight on turbulent conditions. The wind was coming off the hedge and many promising climb outs ended in the model being shot down at about 20 feet).

Here's Daniel's beautiful new Flitzer:

and my lost Viper:

Above: the Viper was a perfect test model for the new motors. Here it is before it was modified for TSP L-2 motors and before I removed all the nose weight. RIP :(

The T-38 again proved itself equally at home in calm or wind.
Here is Daniel's sophisticated rounded tissue over white painted balsa version, which loved a TSP L-2 HP:

and the rather smaller T-38 I built for my Aeomodeller March 2021) article:

which is very happy on 150 mN

More later (Daniel has some videos).

STOP PRESS! The Viper was found by some kind person who knew it was mine!

Very nice Roger. I wish I could have been there. This week I was in Berlin.

I'll be in the UK next month with a few goodies for you!

Daniel's son Max took some videos of our flights which Daniel will (in time) edit and post on our You Tube channel.

Meanwhile, here are some stills from three of these (more to follow):

The Rapier L-2LTpowered Draken gets away for a successful, if low level flight. Bit more power needed!

Daniel launches his OD FD1 on its successful maiden flight. L-1 powered at the moment, an L-2LT would suit it perfectly. I look on with the Viper ready to go. Note the weather is overcast and calm at this time. It did become sunny, breezy, and therefore challenging in the early afternoon.

No problems with Daniel's Flitzer - a standard L-2 suits it perfectly.

More later, I hope. :)

The MiG 15 also went well with a 150 mN TSP L-2:

The last photo above is a 'Spot the model' jet competition' The MiG 15 missed the trees (though not the turbulence) and 'landed' in the gap.

Next time I'll try a 200 mN motor or even (why not?) an L-2HP. :P

Does anyone have any images of Chris' rather lovely Flitzer model I rather liked the scheme for another build.

Roger replies:

Is this the one?
