TOPIC: Lighting Rapiers on the Flying Field

Removing one of the five cells reduces the voltage (and current) to the filament. I'm don't know what the inbuilt charger will make of the changed configuration!

If its essential to use the cord zap filaments I'd suggest, as a mod, a low resistance wire wound resistor in series with the element.
