TOPIC: RIP Chuck Yeager

Herr Mutke? That story I haf not heard. I thought the Me262's limiting Mach number was about 0.8. Please enlighten us!

Getting back to Chuck Yeager and a possible 'Mass Yeager Launch' in 2021, it occurred to me that we shouldn't limit ourselves to just the Bell XS-1, as Yeager also flew the rocket propelled F-104 Starfighter, was associated with the F-20 Tigershark, and, perhaps more to to point, the Bell X-1A, which, like the Starfighter, nearly killed him, see:

Richard Crossley had a very tasty X-1A back in the early exciting Rapier Renaissance days (2002?) :



but I don't know if anybody else built one. Here's his plan.


This is a typical excellent Crossley design which (Richard told me) flies very well. If anyone would like copies of the two-sheet plan please ask. I'm very tempted myself!

Didn't a Farnborough test flight Spitfire get close or pass Mach 1 in a dive and bent the wings?

I would very much like the plan please Roger so I can add it to the want to build list, oh and the Skyrocket if you know of a plan.

Wow! What a beauty the 1A is.

Well,
For the last several years, Otto Wagner, a professor at Munich's Technical University, has done computer simulations to try to verify Mutke's claim. He has been able to simulate the Me262 at Mach 1.02 — just above the speed of sound — but he says the basic data on the plane's aerodynamics are not reliable. He's now trying to obtain wind tunnel studies from 1944 at the Messerschmitt factory in Berlin to do a more accurate simulation.
That's from a 2001 newspaper report. Maybe more research has been done by now. Actual 262 airframes still exist one, would have thought a representative simulation could be made.

Roger (in a desperate effort to bring this potentially productive forum thread back on track) ... Herr Mutke sounds a bit of a confabulist to me.
Chuck Yeager's favourite fighter jet, which I don't think has been modelled before (for Rapier/Jetex) either profile or 'sticks and tissue', was the F-20 'Tigershark':



There are other, more colourful liveries available.





Apart from those horrid wing tip launching rails and missiles it looks a great subject that should, as a model, fly even even better than the T-38 Talon from which it is clearly derived.

I don't know whether or not he flew the Skyrocket, I just think it is the more attractive aircraft of the bunch.
