GUSTY
Description: Two of America's top model builders teamed up to produce this contest flying rocket design. Gusty, by Joe Bilgri and Joe Foster.

In these days when everyone seems to be getting rocket conscious it is not too unusual to see a surge of interest in the rocket-powered model event at local meets and the Nationals. This interest rubbed off on us and we teamed up with Joe Foster to design an entry for the 1958 Nats. We started early in the year to be sure of having a model that would stand up under competition and one which would have the best chance of winning under average con-ditions.

In starting our design, we noticed that the trend in models was to equip handlaunch gliders with Jetex units. On looking over various possibilities, we soon gave this idea up in favor of a lightweight floater which would circle tightly and have a good chance of picking up a light thermal. This, in our minds, would give us the edge against heavier models that would have to find a real hooker to soar.

By the time the Nats rolled around, we were ready for a real battle royal. But, the high winds threw us a curve for it was soon apparent that a contestant would have all he could do to get all of his flights in for one event without trying to fly others. The day proved to be unusual as many of the other days during the Nats were calm and hot. This day the wind was up and the runways were wet from a rain the night before.

Joe Foster considered that his best model was the Gusty and we decided that our Nordic was our top ship. As a result, the battle royal we had planned did not come about, which was probably lucky for us
