SAUNDERS ROE A/1 'Squirt'
SAUNDERS ROE A/1 'Squirt' |
Description: |
This most interesting and unique 20 in span model of the SARO A/1 prototype jet fighter seaplane was designed in 1952 by Wilmot-Mansour's Albert Judge in 1952 for twin Jetex 50 power. Nick-named the 'Squirt', [quote, source unknown] "The fourth in a series of scale models for Jetex motors, the Saunders Roe A/1 is a most interesting and ambitious project. All credit to the designer of this model, AA Judge, for keeping the construction essentially practical and relatively straightforward.
For the power, two Jetex 50 units are deployed, tucked into jet tubes built into the trailing edge of the wing centre section ...rugged enough to take the normal landing shocks, and the tailplane is well protected by its high mounting position. An ingenious feature of the model is a simple 'automatic rudder' operating on a pendulum control mechanism. This is to take care of possible variations between the thrusts of the two Jetex motor and this trim the model directionally for stable flying..."
It is suitable for two medium power L-2 motors and (possibly) an electronic flight control system in lieu of the original pendulum controlled rudder.
