That's how Bill Dean introduced his simple sheet balsa 'Space Scout'. "This book", which he refers to, was Bill Dean's Book of Balsa Models, a revised and updated 1970 U S edition of The Eagle Book of Balsa Models, originally published in the U K in 1956.

Bill claimed that the 'Space Scout' was "capable of speeds in excess of 35 m.p.h., along a 400-ft. line, stretched between two trees".

ZYRA SPACE SHIP

Introduced in 1951 to take advantage of Paramount's release of "When Worlds Collide", Zyra was Wilmot Mansour's first venture into spaceship modelling.

The kit was promoted with this enthusiastic salute to the space age: “Just as the atomic age has begun, so the day when mall first leaves the earth and travels to the stars is nearly with us. Already rockets have travelled 250 miles away from the earth's surface, and although latest developments are shrouded in offical secrecy, the fact that the Americans have a Government sponsored project for projecting and building a space platform which will assume its own orbit round the earth, shows that it is already within the immediate bounds of possibility to overcome the earth's gravitational pull. When this is done, there is every reason to believe that within a few years, rockets piloted by radar will sail away into space, orbit the moon, and return to earth with sufficient data to enable us to begin building the first man-carrying spaceship.

“In view of this, films like the Paramount picture "When Worlds Collide" and models of space ships based on available technical data, will help to bring to the public new vistas opening to the whole of mankind.”

It was designed by one "Royston B. Selwyn". The editor of SAM Speaks, August 1997 wrote that "Doug McHard points out that the name of the designer of the Astral rocket model was an anagram of 'TOWNER' and 'BOYS'. He thinks they may have been hiding from the law – that on the use of fireworks!" However, there’s more to the name than an anagram of the names of the two law-evaders – the letters 'SLYN', to be precise. What can they signify?

The Astral Rocket Plane itself was advertised at a price of 6s. 6d., “plans only” 1s. 6d., and “rockets separate” (“which have received official sanction”) 7 1/2d. each.

This scale De Havilland 100 Vampire, designed by A J Cockle, was published in Aeromodeller in August 1947, just ten months before the Jetex motors were released onto the retail market.

Its 40 in. wingspan gave it, according to the plan, a 1 in. to the foot scale. Fully sheeted, it weighed 12 oz. ("without rocket"), giving a wing loading of 7.2 oz./sq. ft. A fixed undercarriage enabled it to take off, in Cockle’s phrase, "like a 'Vampire'". It boasted such details as a sliding cockpit cover and (mock) elevator counter-balances.

The accompanying article gave no flying hints and no details of the motor. Indeed the plan describes it as a "petrol driven model", yet has dotted lines in the centre of the fuselage showing the "position of rocket" and an outline of the fused rocket end emerging from the rear of the fuselage.

This scale De Havilland 108 Swallow was another Howard Boys design obtainable from Powakits.

He also favoured tailless models as "suitable for rocket drive", since it was "possible […] to fit a rocket in the tail end of a model. I have managed this very successfully in a scale model of the D.H. Swallow."

At last, on July 27th [1944], Sparey has plans for a "new" model, unusually graceful and well-proportioned. This is because it is based on a German rocket model of 1936 [Ed.: This is undoubtedly the Haase Rocket Plane, depicted by Frank Zaic in his Model Aeronautical Yearbook of 1944]. In discussing the model Sparey doesn't make it clear whether he is talking about the German model or his own, or when the flights of the latter happened, if at all. He mentions liability to damage and the erratic behaviour of the rockets but this could be about the German original. It is clear that our author was interested in rocket flights at that time and gathered information on rocket fuel but whether he built and flew such models is doubtful.
A full write up is included in the pdf.
